Whāngarei Hospital Catheterisation Laboratory

Airzone have been a supplier of HVAC services to the Northland District Health Board since 1993 and we have extensive knowledge of Whangarei Hospital environment.

We have a proven track record of delivering complex hospital solutions in Northland, including the NDHB Theatre Expansion, Isolation Oxygen Upgrade and the Kensington Private Hospital Expansion.

The mechanical scope of works for the Catheterisation Laboratory at Whangarei Hospital included installation of air handling units (AHUs) to serve the new laboratory and the general clinical areas including associated outdoor, supply, return and spill air distribution systems.

The Catheterisation Laboratory was treated as a standard operating theatre for the purpose of this project and the solution included:

  • Fan coil units (FCUs) to serve the staff room, general office areas and the computer room including the associated secondary air distribution system
  • Ventilation systems to serve the new FCUs and a new UPS room
  • Extract systems to serve new wet areas
  • Split system air conditioning for the communication room housing digital equipment and passive air transfer ducts
  • New heating hot water (HHW) and chilled water (CHW) pipework reticulation systems from existing HHW and CHW headers located within the hospital environment
  • Extension of existing exhaust air ducts serving an existing calorifier room
  • Relocation of existing split system condensers and verification that the new locations met refrigeration pipework length limitations
  • Provide condensate drainage from the new AHUs, FCUs and split system to tundishes provided
  • Electrical for Mechanical and Electrical for Control services including a new motor control centre (MCC).

Argon Construction completed this successful project in May 2021. Commissioning of the new and modified HVAC systems met all of the requirements of the project specifications.

The new Catheterisation Laboratory is great asset to the Northland District Health Board with diagnostic imaging equipment used to visualise the arteries and chambers of the heart and treat any stenosis or abnormalities found.
